Frequently asked questions
A few things worth knowing.
About the work, the working relationship, and where Retail Reason fits.
Working with Startup Success Lab
Who is the strongest fit for direct supplier support?
Suppliers with awarded Walmart or Sam’s Club business who need help executing. That can mean launch preparation, private brand handoffs, performance reporting, merchant updates, or establishing a useful weekly operating rhythm.
Do you only work with startups?
No. I work with established suppliers and advisory firms as well as growing companies. The important questions are what your business needs and whether my experience can help.
Can you work alongside our existing broker or advisor?
Yes. We agree on responsibilities and communication at the outset, around the people already supporting the business. I won’t take a partner’s clients; my role is to strengthen the work they do for them.
What do you offer brokers, advisors, and agents?
Scintilla Charter advisory, Retail Reason enablement, AI and private brand expertise, and custom or white-label product builds. Work can help a team interpret client performance, use new tools, or build a reusable capability for the firm.
Can you build a product under our brand?
Yes. We can scope a custom or white-label knowledge tool, reporting experience, workflow, or client product. Data access, branding, ownership, implementation, maintenance, and support are agreed for the engagement.
How are engagements priced?
Fees depend on the scope and working relationship. We agree on responsibilities, deliverables, and commercial terms before work begins. There is no single package that fits every supplier, partner, or product build.
Getting more from Scintilla Charter
We already pay for Charter. Can you help us use it better?
Yes. The work can span shopper and category questions, assortment, product and promotion investigations, the digital shopping journey, customer research, and audience planning. I bring analytical tools and retail judgment to the capabilities available to your team. We start with a focused decision brief or action plan, with evidence, limitations, and recommendations.
Is this a project, training, or ongoing advisory?
We can begin with a focused business question. Ongoing advisory supports investigations across Charter as your commercial priorities evolve, with a repeatable workflow for the team. Training can be included where it helps people use the tools and interpret their outputs.
Can you help with customer research or product testing?
I can help define the business question, shape the study and audience, and interpret the findings. Surveys, video feedback, and in-home product testing serve different purposes. We work with Walmart Research Services where needed; paid studies, enrichment, research services, and product-testing logistics are scoped separately.
How does audience planning work with our media team?
We can assess relevant Insights Activation opportunities, review an audience definition, and prepare a handoff to your authorized Walmart Connect media team. Your media team owns campaign budgets, creative, launch, and management. Account access and any audience send are confirmed for the engagement.
How does Charter advisory fit with Retail Reason Analytics?
They have complementary roles. Analytics is being built for repeatable account and portfolio work, including category comparisons, assortment context, and selected co-purchase observations. Charter advisory adds hands-on investigation, interpretation, research planning, and team workflows across the platform. That ongoing work can sit alongside Analytics as the product develops. Analytics remains in development.
Retail Reason and the retailer relationship
What is the difference between Startup Success Lab and Retail Reason?
Startup Success Lab is Matt Drake’s advisory, execution, and product-building business. Retail Reason is its product brand. You can engage Matt for business support or explore Retail Reason products on their own website.
Is Retail Reason Intelligence available?
Yes. Intelligence provides maintained retail operating guidance through supported AI assistants for Walmart suppliers, Sam’s Club suppliers, U.S. Walmart Marketplace sellers, and their advisors. The Retail Reason website lists current coverage, supported assistants, and plans.
Does Intelligence connect to my retailer accounts?
The standalone Intelligence service works from the questions and context you provide. It does not connect to your retailer portals or retrieve your account data.
Is Retail Reason Analytics available?
Analytics is in development. It is being built for Walmart first-party supplier and advisor workflows using authorized Scintilla Charter data, with a focus on account and portfolio performance, investigation, and business reviews.
Are you affiliated with Walmart or Sam’s Club?
My experience includes working at Sam’s Club. Startup Success Lab and Retail Reason are independent of Walmart Inc. and Sam’s Club; they are not retailer services or endorsements.
